Attorney Geoff Lorenz works with individuals who are contemplating divorce or struggling with other family law issues, such as paternity, child custody, child support, and spousal support or maintenance. Geoff helps clients work through these sensitive issues and counsels clients on how to most effectively safeguard their interests and the interests of their children and cope with the emotional challenges they may encounter.

A significant part of Geoff’s family law practice deals with helping individuals through a divorce and confronting the legal, emotional, and financial challenges that it may bring. It is important to consult with a Wisconsin divorce attorney early in the process to protect yourself and your family, both emotionally and financially. Consulting with a divorce attorney does not mean you have to get divorced or that you have decided on divorce, but it allows you to have the essential tools and knowledge to make an informed decision. All consultations are confidential and private.

When clients meet with Geoff, his goal is to help them through the legal process of terminating their marriage in the least traumatizing way. He works with clients through a collaborative process to the extent possible, avoiding the costly and emotionally-trying court system. Unfortunately, however, not all dissolutions are amicable, and Geoff has the expertise to vigorously protect your children, assets, and interests in court.

In addition, if you are not happy with the outcome of the decision that was originally reached in your case or if your circumstances have changed, Geoff can counsel you on the legal options that are available to you. If a dispute arises regarding a provision in the original divorce decree or if matters arise after the judgment has been entered, attorney Geoff Lorenz can walk you through the process of seeking a legal remedy.

He can also work to modify an order or award of spousal support, child support, child custody, or parenting time.

With compassion and professionalism, attorney Geoff Lorenz has the unique skills and capacity to help families reconcile differences and restore working relationships. Contact him today.

Divorce & Separation

Legally referred to as “Dissolution of Marriage” in Wisconsin, divorce and separation issues can affect every aspect of your, and your family’s life. They can also be complicated and time consuming – especially when children and property are involved.

Parenting Time

Also referred to as visitation, parenting time provides parents with legal rights to spend time with their children. While generally determined at the time of separation or divorce, changed circumstances due to work, travel, and changes in residence can create challenges for everyone involved. We can assist you in obtaining or modifying parenting time.

Child Support

Wisconsin child support guidelines dictate how support should be calculated. However, Wisconsin courts can vary from those guidelines by looking at what is in the best interest of the child and to maintain the child’s overall standard of living enjoyed during the marriage.

Custody

Child custody is likely one of the most emotionally charged issues in a divorce or separation. In Wisconsin, there are two types of custody: legal custody and physical custody.

  • Legal custody. Legal custody is the authority to be involved the major decisions involving the child, which include health care, education and religious training.
  • Physical custody. Physical custody is the authority to determine the routine daily care and control of the child as well as the residence of the child.

Both kinds of custody can be either sole or joint. Wisconsin courts look at what is in the best interest of the child when deciding custody issues and rely upon specific factors in making that determination. Evaluation and presentation of all factors is vital to any custody issue.

Spousal Maintenance

Also referred to as alimony, spousal maintenance can be difficult to determine as there are no set guidelines. Wisconsin courts will make decisions based on the:

  • Age of both parties;
  • Education and employability of the spouse seeking maintenance;
  • Physical and emotional health;
  • Income and living expenses of both parties;
  • Length of the marriage;
  • Property apportioned to each spouse in the divorce; and
  • Standard of living during the marriage.

While many family law issues can be settled amicably, the emotions surrounding the breakup of a family sometimes make that impossible. Lodi attorney Geoff Lorenz understands how difficult these issues can be. He takes the time to listen, truly understand your situation and make sure that your interests are represented.
